Have you ever considered how the most popular stories of our time might be less memorable if not driven by fully-developed characters? For example, would the Harry Potter series be as unforgettable if the main antagonist were anyone but Lord Voldemort, the lipless, half-muggle evil wizard who wants to escape death and rule a muggle-free magical world? In her article “Ordinary Characters Can Be Extraordinary,” author and editor C.S. Lakin writes, “To have a great story and engaging characters, you would need to get under all that hair and makeup to find the not-so-beautiful person beneath who has needs and fears, and believes lies.” In this class, we will take Lakin at her word. We will look at examples from prose, poetry, and film of extraordinary characters to create unforgettable characters of our own.

This class takes place at the Boston Public Library's Mattapan branch, 1350 Blue Hill Avenue, Mattapan, MA 02126. If you have any difficulty signing up online, please call 617-695-0075.
