In this 6-week course, students will focus on writing, revising and completing a novella manuscript, while also examining and discussing the craft of the novella form. In discussing craft essentials, we will also read excerpts from novellas by authors such as Toni Morrison, Jacqueline Woodson, Haruki Murakami and Banana Yoshimoto. The workshop component of the course will offer a workshop experience for students who will have the opportunity to share up to five pages (double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font) of new or revised novella manuscript pages each week with the class for on-the-spot feedback. Students will have the opportunity to brainstorm ideas for their novella on the first day of class and will be given prompts to help guide their weekly scene writing at home. By the end of the course, students will have generated a strong inroad into the draft of a novella manuscript. Note: this class accommodates students who might decide to expand their novella into a traditional-length novel with a practical discussion on the connections between novella and novel writing.

This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! If you have questions about remote learning, please feel free to reach out to [email protected] for more information.
