In this 10-week course, students will focus on building the foundation of a full-length draft of a historical fiction novel, while also understanding the fundamental craft elements of this ever popular and complex genre, and what sets it apart from contemporary literary prose. During each class, students will examine and discuss the essential characteristics of historical fiction, drawing from the work of Whitney Scharer, Colson Whitehead, Anthony Doerr, E.L. Doctorow and Toni Morrison. During the second portion of each class, students will have the opportunity to workshop 4-5 pages of their historical fiction novel manuscript each class with a focus on developing key aspects of their book under the specific craft needs of the historical fiction genre form.

This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! If you have questions about remote learning, please feel free to reach out to [email protected] for more information.
