Writing Monologues

Cue the coach giving her inspiring speech. A lover finally shares his heart. The hero defeats their enemy and relishes in lessons learned. Whatever the pivotal moment, when a character gives a monologue, it demands attention. It's important for this dialogue to not simply take up space, but that it serves a specific purpose. In this seminar, you'll learn the ingredients of a strong monologue, as well as rules to bend and break. Through the use of playwriting writing exercises, close readings of monologues by contemporaries such as Lauren Gunderson, Terrell Alvin McCranney, Jocelyn Bioh, and Mike Lew, writers of any genre will come away with a stronger craft based skill that is sure to enhance their work.
Class Format
This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!
Scholarship Information
