What We Talk About When We Talk About Food

Using food as the central theme to explore childhood memories of comfort, denial, trauma, and joy, this class will highlight examples within well-known food essays --why they work and how we as writers can transform our writing through others' work.

Class focus will be on food, why we need to see beyond a recipe, a memory and explore ways with which we talk about things that happened (or didn't happen) to us or others. How does an author tie a memory of food to what's happening in the political world now, in their immediate world? Why is it important?This session will weave in social justice, in association with personal narrative within memoir and creative nonfiction with discussions of work by Jo Ann Beard, Sharanya Deepak, Anjali Enjeti, Arundhati Roy and others. 

This session will work well for memoirists, essayists and multi-form writers interested in taking their craft to the next level.

Class Format

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
