Week of Sci-fi, Fantasy: Focus on Made-up Languages
[Classes marked as “full” can still have scholarship spots available. So apply! More information is listed below.]
You have your fantasy creatures, spaceships, and story ideas -- but what about the languages of your world? Jump into a week of writing sci-fi and fantasy with a focus on inventing languages to populate your world. We’ll explore how language and culture interact, how they inform your character’s decisions, and basic principles of linguistics to help us invent languages for our stories. We’ll create a made-up language as a class, and also complete several exercises in order to build several original languages for your stories! By the end of this week, you’ll have notes on the basic vocabulary, grammar rules, and pronunciation of an invented language that you can use in your story, and an understanding of how to effectively use language in worldbuilding. This course is geared toward creative, energetic, and open-minded writers all of levels who are particularly interested in worldbuilding. Writing notebooks will be available, but feel free to bring your own. For writers age 13 - 18 ONLY.
Parents/guardians must also complete this permission form online before the start of the class.
