As an editor, I’m always amazed by how many first-time writers make the same mistakes in their novels and stories. Editors and agents can usually spot a novice writer within the first few pages of a manuscript. In this class, you will learn the top ten most common fiction mistakes and how to avoid them. Topics explored will include point-of-view, plot, structure, character, dialogue, and language. This class will contain a lecture, a Q&A, and in-class writing exercises. In addition, you will be given a “cheat sheet” to use when crafting a scene or story from scratch. This class is good for beginning writers looking to develop their understanding of the basic elements of fiction. It is an introductory course best taken before or as a refresher to Fiction I.
