In this seminar, we'll look at models for short (under 1,000 word) personal essays in a variety of mainstream commercial publications: Boston Globe Magazine's "Connections" column; NY Times "Modern Love,"; Salon's "Life" and a couple others from magazines, newspapers, websites and popular literary journals. We'll then look at the craft, form and structure elements that make up these essays; in class exercises will allow us to immediate put into practice what we observe. By the end of our 6 hours together, you'll have written a draft or serious notes and passages towards a new short, publishable, commercial personal essay.
