The Lyric: Poetry and Hip-Hop - Remote!
One of the most under appreciated methods of poetry is the lyric. You might have a fantastic poem, but do the words sound good when you read them aloud? Are your syllables hitting the right rhythm? Are your verbs and nouns hitting those high notes when needed? Poetry of course is a written form but it is also auditory and the best way to understand the music of poetry is to turn to actual music, specifically hip-hop.
In this class, we will discuss how you can obtain a lyrical ear through listening to some of the most influential artists in hip-hop—Biggie, Gangster Boo, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem—while reading poets directly inspired by hip-hop such as José Olivarez, Erica Dawson, Danez Smith, and Franny Choi. While reading and listening, we will supplement our discussions with Priya Parmar’s “Poetry Behind the Walls,” a recent study on the correlation between poetry and rap lyrics.
This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! If you have questions about remote learning, please feel free to reach out to [email protected] for more information.
