Class Description:
Are you interested in learning how to write a play? Maybe you've already begun to create a story for the stage. Perhaps you're curious to explore a new theatrical genre. In this class you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the art of playwriting. With craft based writing exercises, group discussions, close readings of excerpts from plays by contemporary playwrights such as Charly Evon Simpson, Kristoffer Díaz, Kimberly Bellflower, Qui Nguyen, and Julia Izumi, you are sure to develop a stronger hand at world building, character development, plot, and the magic that is theatre.
You will also have the chance to hear your work read out loud, as well as give and receive feedback that is rooted in the Liz Lerman Response practice. By the end of the week, you will leave with a final draft of a ten minute play, and a plethora of scenes that may bloom into future full length plays. For writers age 13 - 18 ONLY.
Takeaway:
This class is designed for writers with a flare for drama at all levels who want to see their work on a stage or screen one day. By the end of the week, you'll learn how to give and receive constructive feedback to and from your peers. You will also come away with a collection of monologues, scenes with stage directions, and a final draft of a ten-minute play to be workshopped out loud by your classmates.
Building Community:
To offer young writers a chance to interact with a larger group of their peers and to expose them to a variety of genres, this YAWP weeklong will culminate with a cross-course gathering on Friday afternoon from 2:15pm-3:30pm. Students of Kira Rockwell's Beginning Playwriting will join students of Stephanie Brownell's A Week of Science Fiction and Fantasy to share their work, learn from each other’s craft, or create something new altogether!
