"I think that what a person normally goes to the cinema for,” Andrei Tarkovsky once said, “is time.” The presence of time is most obvious and important in what is often called ‘slow cinema,’ a style of filmmaking pioneered by Tarkovsky and many others. Known for its emphasis on long takes and a minimalist, observational style, slow cinema offers a chance for screenwriters to reconsider how time can operate in their stories to enhance both the power of the image and the presence of characters.

Such methods not only give audiences a fascinating viewing experience, but can deeply benefit the screenwriter as well. This 3-hour seminar uses group discussion and writing activities focused around script excerpts and clips of films by Andrei Tarkovsky, Tsai Ming-Liang and others to understand how slow cinema uses time and pacing as a way of getting to the heart of what it means to develop characters, to build themes and entire worlds in screenwriting. Join us to discover the numerous insights slow cinema has to offer!
