Stephen King told us, “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.” Great readers make great writers. In this seminar, you'll learn the skills needed to examine the stories you read. Through close reading of published stories, you'll be able to identify the choices the author made and consider the effect of those choices on the reader. We'll be asking a lot of questions to get at the heart of how the author used each technique. When these decisions arise in your own writing, you'll have the tools to use those techniques. By the end of the seminar, you'll have the tools to examine a story with a writer's eye and strategies to implement them in your own writing right away.

Class Format

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
