Ian McEwan is a master of the realistic novel whose work has gone from the dark and almost macabre The Cement Garden to the poignant novella On Chesil Beach. His is the clear and simple prose of a master, eloquent and agile in ways that surprise us when we really examine them. In this class, we will look at excerpts from his work, particularly On Chesil Beach, Atonement, Saturday, and Enduring Love, to see how McEwan solves problems in narrative structure, voice, plotting, and style. Students will do writing exercises in class to tackle some of the same elements using McEwan's strategies. There will be a packet of readings to cover before the class date.
