This hands-on, active workshop will focus on the role that setting -- the places and eras that have shaped us -- plays in our lives. As memoir-writers and storytellers, how can we capture the essence of places we have lived, so that a reader can experience the world we come from, whether that world was Boston in the 1960s, Seattle in the '80s, or New York City in 2001?

We will do several short writing exercises in class, and examine the work of writers who bring places alive, including Kim Barnes, Howard Axelrod, and others. Come prepared to write, to listen, and to share in a supportive atmosphere. You will leave the workshop with drafts of several short pieces in progress, along with an expanded toolbox to develop a sense of place in your work.
