First drafts of novels can be messy, amorphous, and daunting. Sometimes, extensive critical feedback can be counterproductive before the first draft is finished, yet writers often find themselves losing focus without support and guidance. In this class, we'll discuss craft issues—point of view, characterization, the protagonist's desire, plot and conflict, the passage of time—examining how published authors handle these elements. Over the course of the class, we'll read the novel Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid, and excerpts from other novels provided by the instructor. We'll do writing and revision exercises in class, and read short scenes from each other's work, providing feedback in an environment that recognizes the specific challenges of the novel in progress. Novels of all genres are welcome. Please bring the first page (double-spaced, 12-point font) of your own novel to the first class, and have a copy of Such A Fun Age on hand.

This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! If you have questions about remote learning, please feel free to reach out to [email protected] for more information.
