First drafts of novels can be messy, amorphous, and daunting. On top of that, writers may often find themselves losing focus without support and guidance. That’s where Novel In Progress comes in. Over six weeks, students will have opportunities to share ten pages from their work, which the rest of the class will read at home in preparation for an in-class discussion. In addition to weekly workshops, we will do exercises and discuss craft issues such as characterization, the protagonist's desire, plot and outlining, point of view, voice, dialogue. In the last class, all writers will be invited to submit twenty pages of their novels to receive a written critique from the instructor. Novels of all genres are welcome. Please bring the first page (double-spaced, 12-point font) of your novel to the first class.

This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! If you have questions about remote learning, please feel free to reach out to [email protected] for more information.
