Have you always wanted to try your hand at writing fiction but don’t know where to begin? Or do you have some experience but have fallen out of the habit or need a little more inspiration? In this class, you’ll devote a day to the art of fiction. You’ll read and discuss selections from literature by authors including Ha Jin, Edwidge Danticat, James Salter, and others, receive instruction on fundamentals such as story architecture, characterization, and plot, do writing exercises, and have a chance to share what you write in class for on-the-spot feedback aimed at identifying what’s most compelling in the work and ideas for developing it further. You’ll also receive advice on how to keep yourself writing and guidance on next steps. Come to class ready to write, and expect to leave with new material and a clearer idea where to go from here.
