Are you hungry to write about food? Food writing is a thriving field that continues to gain even more popularity with the rise of social media, and food-themed reality TV. Whether you are a culinary newbie or an experienced foodie, in this class, you’ll take your passion for food to the page.

Each week, we will explore a different form of food writing––like food in memoir, magazine features, culinary blogs, and reviews––and use it as a jumping off point for our own work. To further inspire our work, we will read widely from examples of writers in the culinary field, like Culinary writer and TV celebrity Carla Hall, restaurateur and PBS cooking show host Ming Tsai, and food and culture critic John Birdsall. You will receive feedback each week from a handful of your fellow students, and at the end of class, you will have the opportunity to choose one draft and submit a revision for feedback from the rest of the class.

You will come out of this class with a better understanding and tools of the food-writing genre, several drafts, and the insight and feedback to continue developing them.

*Note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments will be given on a weekly basis. Students will have access to the online class portal starting at 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.
