Do you want to try writing poetry, but don’t know where to start? Do you need to refresh your
understanding of the fundamentals of the genre? “Introduction to Poetry” will offer you an
introductory level of poetry techniques. We will focus on a different poetic form each session,
participate in writing exercises, and read a diverse lineup of contemporary poets. Specifically, you’ll

• A weekly craft talk focusing on an aspect of writing poetry
• In-class prompts to generate content and explore forms you might not have tried
• Group workshopping of poetry written by you and your classmates
• Individualized critique of your poetry by the instructor
• Discussion of published poems and some essays by authors such as W.S. Merwin,
Reginald Shepherd, Catie Rosemurgy, Tommy Pico, Claudia Rankine, and more.

By the end, you’ll not only be versed in the fundamentals, but you’ll walk away with new poems, as
well as feedback for revision.

This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! If you have questions about remote learning, please feel free to reach out to [email protected] for more information.
