Whether your model is Kafka or Krantz, Morrison or García Márquez, your voice and narratives are unique, but that doesn't mean you don't need to revise! Fiction II is designed to give intermediate writers, more experienced writers, and those familiar with workshop the intensive review and analysis they need to make their stories deeper and sharper. Classes are primarily focused on student workshop, but may also include writing exercises, tackling craft issues, and discussing published stories, including work by such authors as:

  • Toni Cade Bambara
  • Can Xue
  • Carmen Maria Machado
  • Sandra Cisneros
  • Anthony Doerr
  • Junot Díaz
  • Tobias Wolff
  • Julio Cortázar
  • Aimee Bender
  • ZZ Packer

In addition to the class's comments, you will receive in-depth written feedback from the instructor. The goal is to write and revise two short stories, up to 25 pages each. While novelists may find the creation of self-contained narratives useful, workshopping novel chapters is discouraged.
