Flash fiction is exactly what it sounds like—fiction that can be read in a flash. Other names for it include short-short stories, sudden fiction, and micro fiction. In China, they’ve got even better names: pocketsize story, palm-sized story, and the smoke-long story—just long enough to read while smoking a cigarette. Every fiction writer should have an arsenal of flash stories to dip into for the ever growing number of flash contests each year, for the occasion that your friend who runs a journal needs something fast, and for general, slightly lower-stakes, and more light-hearted submitting. Flash stories are not only quicker to read, but they can be quicker to write, and lend well to risk-taking, experimentation, and learning things about yourself as a writer you never knew. In this class we'll read, write, and workshop flash stories, and by the end of the six weeks you'll have at least six flash stories of your own!

This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! If you have questions about remote learning, please feel free to reach out to [email protected] for more information.
