Teen Summer: Experimental Writing: Work that Defies a Single Genre or Form (REMOTE)

This class will be hosted remotely! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance!

Depending on the instructor, there will be a mix of large and small group activities as well as some online and offline work time with plenty of breaks in between to recharge. As with any YAWP class, students will be encouraged to stretch themselves and to also express their pacing needs to the instructor, in case adjustments are necessary. Instructors almost always have a variety of writing assignments to suit a wide variety of comfort and experience levels. Class Description:
Do you have a hard time answering the question, “what kind of writer are you”? Do traditional writing conventions constrain your wildest and most brilliant ideas? Are you still trying to figure out your “voice”? Your stories should never be pigeon-holed into any single style. When you meld together multiple styles, your work deepens and expands. During this week of genre-bending, -blending, and -embodying, we will smash the boundaries of our craft and mosaic the shards into something bold. We will hone our technique so that our form/structure/syntax carries as much weight as our language. Find your edge, collaborate with your fellow rebellious writers, and redefine the rules of the game. For writers age 13 - 18 ONLY.

Takeaways:

By the end of the class, you’ll have a draft of a wholly unique piece that cannot fit into any single genre. You’ll also have the inspiration and technical tools for assembling multiple pieces into a collection.

Scholarships:
Classes marked as “full” can still have scholarship spots available. So apply!
