In this hands-on class, appropriate for writers at all levels, we will discuss the elements of effective scenes in memoir and other creative nonfiction, and how to 'show, don't tell' in practical terms. We'll look at examples of well-crafted scenes in books like The Glass Castle, and in memoir vignettes from Brevity and other literary journals. We'll use photos and other visual cues as prompts for in-class writing exercises, and students will have the opportunity to share what they've written in class and get on-the-spot feedback.
