In “Intro to Screenwriting,” students learned the ins and outs of Hollywood structure, but what about films that defy or reinvent that structure? In this ten-week advanced workshop, students will explore alternative ways of telling a story for the screen while experimenting with their own writing.

Every other week we will analyze a famous work that breaks from the norm and perform a writing exercise connected to what we have discussed. Writers may continue working on their screenplays from "Intro to Screenwriting" or "Screenwriting II," or work with a series of short films.

Topics of discussion will include Hollywood structure strengths and weaknesses, the monomyth structure, multi-character storytelling, non-linear narratives, and connecting a story through theme.

Designed for writers of any genre looking to create something original or for screenwriters interested in making their current screenplay more complex, this class will discuss alternative methods of structuring your screenplay while studying writers who are reinventing the medium such as Charlie Kaufman, David Lynch, Jean Luc-Godard, Catherine Briellat, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Christopher Nolan.
