Who Gets to Write What?: Writers of Color Meeting and Discussion
Earlier this month, Lionel Shriver's keynote address at the Brisbane Writers Festival set off a series of critical responses and essays, including keynote attendee Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s piece in The Guardian. Since Shriver’s keynote went viral, there’s been renewed energy and confusion around not-so-new questions: What exactly is cultural appropriation and are we even using the term correctly? Do limits to artistic freedom really exist, and if so, how are they made? Who gets to write what?
Join us at GrubStreet’s Writers of Color meeting on October 20th at 6:00pm for a discussion about cultural appropriation and the associated arguments surrounding the phenomenon. The moderated group discussion will begin at 6:15pm, and will be led by Sonya Larson, Eson Kim, and Alveena Shah. The meeting is free, and food and refreshments will be provided. We hope you can join us!
