As we gear up for April's Muse and the Marketplace Conference, where this year many presenters will be talking about writerly rules and rule-breaking, we asked the Grub community for their favorite rule-breaking books. This is a non-exhaustive list of Grubbie recommendations.

Some days, waiting for a new book's release is like waiting to step into a magical bookcase to explore the enchanted forest beyond. And some days, it's a stretch to justify the glossy, social media-friendly image. Today, both are true! The Grub office is gearing up for another winter freeze, and we're contemplating the books set for release in 2018 that we just can't wait to cosy up and hunker down with.

2017 gave us neck-break news cycles, Fifty Shades Darker, and the man romper (why it wasn't the bro romper—or the #bromper—we'll never know). But 2017 also gave us searing memoirs, blazing poetry, and breathtaking novels. In short, it was lit-tastic. These are the Grub staff and community's very best books of the year.
